To the people who don’t understand the “hype” around BTS and their success in America,

People are obsessed with the idea of an underdog succeeding – that’s just the way it’s always been. Ed Sheeran, Justin Bieber, Carly Rae Jepsen – they all started out on Youtube, and now they are household names. They were talent under our noses, and they deserved their spotlight. So, when they finally had the light on them, their fans knew that this was how things were supposed to be.

However, people aren’t just obsessed with the successful underdog – they’re obsessed with the pride that comes with being with the underdog from the very beginning. When I say “obsessed,” this is in no means an insult. The pride that comes with stumbling upon a group so talented but unknown is like striking gold and wondering why people still can’t see it shine, so when the public eye finally sees that gold glimmer, we feel like we’re still holding it in our hands, knowing that “finally, they see what I always saw.”

BTS has been around for longer than most people know, especially people in America who just recently saw the American Music Awards.

bts-1-e1511297425383

Back when their concept was dark, hip-hop sans the bright colors, ARMY was a young, adolescent group, supporting their idols through social media step by step until one day, BTS won their first award for their song “I Need U.” I can remember the release of the music video and keeping it on repeat. I wanted BTS to have those views; we all wanted them to finally have that win. From that first win, it only got better from there. All of Asia knew of BTS, and more of the world knew about BTS. Of course, that pride was still there. Some of us were able to say, “I saw you when you were in the dark, doing your best to find the light.”

This is the reality – there is no hype. The fans we saw screaming the BTS fan chant at the AMAs did not spring out of the wood works. They were always there. Even those of us who aren’t as vocal anymore; we knew that this group deserved so much more than they had been given.

The reality of loving KPOP and being involved with the Hallyu scene is that not all groups succeed. There is proof of this in the past year with the use of shows like Produce101 and The Unit which was used to help “failed” idol groups have their time to shine. There is talent everywhere, but not everyone succeeds on the first try. Of the 40 groups who enter the public eye, only a handful actually make it to where they want to be.

For those people you come across who say BTS isn’t talented – that they lip sync – they can’t dance – they’re just pretty boys at the big boy playground and they don’t know what they’re doing…

This is what we need you to understand.

BTS did not come out of nowhere. They’ve always been here. They’ve always been doing exactly what you saw them do the other night at the AMAs. This performance was nothing new – in fact, any BTS fan can say they’ve seen DNA performed a million times over exactly the way they performed it for America. If an artist dances like that, they must be lip syncing, right? Idols in Asia train for this – they train to perform exactly like you saw BTS perform. What you saw wasn’t just “a BTS thing,” this is what idols do. This is not something handed to anyone – you say that groups like this are placed together and have no passion for music. What we say, as people who saw them at their lowest, is that if you have no passion for music, no drive to succeed at doing something you love, no talent to deserve this fame,

Why would you keep trying for years and years even though you still might not make it? Why would you take every chance you could if you didn’t love music with every fiber of your body? Why would you practice through the night, never knowing if anyone would hear your voice if you didn’t have passion?

This is what the idols who we have been supporting through the dark do every single day until they succeed.

You don’t understand the hype around BTS, @PerezHilton? Haven’t you helped musicians rise to the top because you saw their potential when no one else did?

I remember when BTS released I Need U, waiting for that award to finally touch their fingertips. At the same time, another group had released new music, and BTS was pushed to the side because they weren’t important enough. So while I ran back to the friends I had who loved this group like I did, even the rest of the KPOP public eye turned away because this group was still that clump of stone with no shine. Fast forward to when Dope was released, and suddenly, wow, everyone loves BTS? Not two weeks later, BTS was all I saw. The exact same people who told me they didn’t care about this group are posting BTS videos and acting like they’re the ones who just struck gold even though ARMY had been holding it in our hands, trying to prove that we were holding treasure.

This is the “hype.”

The hype is that this “global phenomenon” is nothing new to us. The hype is that we had been holding a spotlight over this group all these years, and finally, the light is shining on them naturally without our help.

The BTS that you’ve just now discovered is the BTS we’ve been trying to show you.

Thank you for finally seeing them.

  1. This post was written so eloquently and wonderfully it’s honestly bringing me to tears. I’ve been stanning bts for nearly 3 years, and this is exactly how I felt. This whole time i knew that they were something special and different. I knew that they deserved so much more appreciation and recognition for their passion and talents. They didnt come out of nowhere, bts have ALWAYS been here and now people are finally starting to see that. I couldn’t be anymore thankful.

  2. Wow. I can’t even breathe. Everything you said. I don’t think I’ve seen anyone describe it like this. That’s exactly how it felt. We had something precious in our hands, something that had their own energy and shine, and now everyone gets to see how amazing that is. Is that why some of us felt a little bit afraid when their popularity gained that much traction after the BBMAs? Because they’ve been amazing like this since the beginning, all of this felt feeble (?), and along with the hate from the other fandoms (that I’ll probably never get used to) seeing all of this happening with our kids, I was nervous – I’m sure not even half as nervous as they were – about going through this “process”. It felt unreal. I have a background with K-pop, but it felt so much like a niche, I know it’s an genre made to be international, but Bangtan is going even beyond that and I respect and admire them so much. To be honest, back in 2015, when I just got back into K-pop and first listened to Dope, I was certain that they were the biggest group in Korea already, not like a rising star, but a stablished, well-known group. Then when I got to know more about them… They’re definitely a treasure.

This a subject that I often discussed with my friends but the way you expressed all of this experience here… That’s exactly what it is! Wow. We know they have the potential to change the way the world perceive music. I’m glad.

Oh, you’re one of my favorite writers now 😂.

And for @perezhilton i hope you’ll stop what you’re doing. BTS didnt do anything wrong to you and to all the people who continuously doubting their talents. I understand westerns are new to kpop but please dont judge them without knowing everything about them. I hope this article will opened their minds about Kpop.

There is nothing you have to thank me for! I wrote this impulsively because I was so overwhelmed by the boys’ performance and the response they got – good and bad. Our goal is to open minds to why we love what we love. We shouldn’t have to explain ourselves, but in this day and age, we need to find ways to explain things that we may not even have reasons to love.

  4. I’ve seen and admired them since their debut and honestly, everything you wrote, was everything I wanted to say, but didn’t have the words to do so. They aren’t my ultimate bias group (EXO is, but that’s not the point) and they have succeeded in every way possible. Getting all this international attention is something very few K-Pop groups can achieve.
This is very well written and I applaud you for it. Also Morgan Freeman needs to narrate this article and play it on loop for ignorant people who think it’s perfectly fine to use K-Pop as a view and subscriber tactic, because it is so so, so much more than just a genre of music. This ‘genre’ of music is people’s dreams and livessel that they are living.
Please publish a book. This content is amazing.

  5. hey, this is quite amazing. I want to express my feelings when I saw someone posted this on twitter, but I really don’t know how to use my words properly. and also, I was so moved by how you said about the highlights and things that armys saw right from the lowest point of BTS. I may not been there from the start and I wish I would, because I only know they exist when someone posted a lyric video of I Need U (around 2015) and after that moment, I slowly become more interested in BTS and here I am, trying to do at least something to contribute and support the boys. I love them so much, and after reading this, I’m so glad that you finally manage to put it into words.

And honestly, until I wrote this article, I had forgotten exactly how long I’d been with the fandom and all the things I’d done just to help this group reach the top. It’s amazing thinking how much we go through with the groups we love, isn’t it? You never really stop to think about how much history you’ve witnessed until someone asks you why you love something. It was easy to write this article because even though I’m part of different fandoms, I will never really leave this one. It’s too genuine, and it’s honestly like seeing a friend achieve their dreams.

  9. Thank you for making a very lovely and honest post about BTS. This is the thing I always wanted to tell others so they can understand about the k-pop world. I’ve been a fan of k-pop since 2007, and I don’t talk much about it because no one around me understand about it and its hard to explain to them, so I just keep it to myself. But thanks to you for making such a detailed explanation. I’m proud of BTS, they did such a great job. Its not easy to get where they are now, but in the end they succeeded. I’m so happy for them, they deserve all the love from their fans. Again thank you for explaining this so well to help many people understand more, not just about BTS but also about k-pop in general.

And girl, I know that feel! I’ve been a fan since 2007; this really isn’t something you can easily talk about with people, especially new friends. I was so lucky to be able to meet like-minded people who I could talk to about KPOP, and I’ve never been happier. We shouldn’t have to feel embarrassed about something that makes us feel so much – truly.

I’ve heard some negative feedback about this article and how there are other groups who’ve made it to the US, but they need to understand that this article isn’t just about BTS – it’s about KPOP in general! 13. I resonate with what’s been written in here. I’ve known BTS since 2013 and boy, did I wish their dream to get known by the world come true! They captivated me ever since No More Dream era and they are undoubtedly a talented, socially-aware, hard-working team. I always have a knack to spot things that are unfortunately underrated and need recognition. Their passion and dedication gradually lead them to what they have always imagined being realized. After they gained popularity around BBMAs, I had this fear of people viewing them as a mere curious novelty rather than a set of individuals that needs to be explored and fully appreciated due to their socially conscious views and understanding toward the young generation but I know that there will always be ARMY who will love BTS for what they are.
BTS has always existed before the big bloom all over the globe (I should act they existed around 2010(?), even then there were people who supported them) and instead of questioning what the hype is, thorough research of BTS should be done. And let me tell you, it’s not only looks, dancing or singing. ”We’re a full package.” The leader RM couldn’t have said it better but if you wonder what he meant by that, dig in further in order to understand him.

  14. This article touched my heart … it was well written and seemed to be written with passion. I’ve known of BTS since 2014 , I still kick myself for not knowing them when they debuted but what can you do … I didn’t know about Kpop at all until I was told about it and I fell for it quickly… I went through numerous groups and they were all great but when I came across BTS I was floored and impressed not to say that the other groups weren’t impressive but BTS has something extra that caught me and didn’t let go … I am happy to say that I am still an Army and still 100% devoted to BTS and I will be until they are done with their venture…. They are a humble and talented group of young men and I’m astonished myself to say that I love them in a caring way and wish the best for them and I say astonished because I’ve never met them and I never knew that that was possible… much love to BTS and the rest of the Army

    1. This is so many months late, but please trust me I read these comments so many times, and everyone’s responses to the article truly touched my heart and inspired me to keep writing the way I do. Thank you for supporting our boys.

Remember, it doesn’t matter when you started to listen. You’re with your ARMY family now, and we aren’t going anywhere.

This sounds super cheesy, but if you go to KCON, we hope to see you there. 15. Thank you. Thank you so much. This is all I can say right now because I’m typing this through tears and I’m shaking. Thank you. They started from NOTHING, they worked so hard just to be pushed aside. Gosh, I can’t even imagine what they or the early ARMYs had to go through at that time. I’m just glad they are finally getting recognized. They deserve this. Any nonfans reading this, trust us, they deserve this.

Early ARMYs did what we could 🙂 There’s no better way to put it. Just as we still do with the groups who still don’t have the spotlight they deserve – we’ll do what we can.

  16. As I may say, your thoughts and words are the voice of every old ARMYS in the world. I am so proud to say that I am new, I found out about BTS last year, checked their MVs and who they really are. But I’m not that vocal like others, I started out listening to their songs inside my closet just not to be mocked. Actually when I’m on the edge of definite despair their song ‘I Need U’ give me some thoughts of hope to be happy. Since then I’ve been making my own way to be their fan, they say there’s a list of qualifications I should meet to admire them, and up until today I’m still keeping it up just to fill the years I was not be able to help them. BTS help me to love myself. And your words hit me so hard that I realized that I stan the right group and be part of a wonderful fandom. I love you so dearest. 💜

  17. BTS has always been hardworking and they are always best for their Army’s (including Myself) before also, today also and they will be till the end!
Those who think that BTS are just 7 common boys with no talent till now are stupids
Actually they don’t need to know! Coz there are already many Army’s who love them and who are always with them till the end .
Those past days when BTS practiced for 17 hrs a day without enough sleep! But had just a bread and leftover tuna to eat! Around pre debut and debut ! They had so exhausted time! They sacrificed their health, their sleep and diet too😭who paining it was they knows!
And now they are flying! All over the world! Bc of what? Because of as u say their beautiful face????
No! Because of their talent and hardworking! Their passion encouraged them! They are here today because sacrified!
If u wanna know then go on checking their history!
Haters gonna hate! Players gonna play! Live ur own life myaann✌
    BTSxArmy❤❤❤❤❤
